• Choose bus / train over private vehicles and take low-impact options whenever possible
  • Stick to the trail when hiking and mountain biking.
  • When in the outdoors follow the age-old guideline: “Take only photos, leave only footprints.”
  • Try to support local businesses that have environmentally-focused businesses or are at least environmentally friendly.
  • Avoid purchases that involve too much waste.  This can be difficult in Japan where the use / overuse of plastic in packaging is a significant issue.
  • Bring your own bags when shopping.  A new law requires businesses to charge for plastic bags at checkout so there is a (small) financial incentive to bring your own.
  • Follow the recycling rules.  This can be challenging for foreign residents as the rules can be quite complex.  For visitors it means disposing of can, PET bottles, plastic, and burnable garbage in the appropriate place.
